What you need to register a domain in India

Less than most people expect. For a .in, a .com or a .co.in you need a name, an email address, a phone number and a way to pay. You do not need a GST registration, a company incorporation certificate, PAN, Aadhaar or proof of Indian residency — the registry asks for none of it.

If somebody is asking you to email a scan of your Aadhaar to register a .in domain, stop and call us instead.

How the process works

1. Search the name. Check every extension at once rather than one at a time.
2. Read the renewal price. It sits beside the registration price on every result here.
3. Choose your term. One to ten years. Longer removes the risk of forgetting.
4. Enter registrant details honestly. Your name or your company’s — never your web designer’s.
5. Pay in INR. UPI or bank transfer. We confirm the payment, then register and invoice.
6. Point it somewhere. Park it, forward it, or host a site. We set the records up free.

The mistake that costs the most

Registering the domain in somebody else’s name. Businesses discover years later that the address on ten thousand printed brochures belongs to an agency that has since closed. Ask whoever handles your website one question — whose name is on the registrant record? — and if the answer is not yours, transfer it now.

Which extension should an Indian business choose?

If your customers are in India, .in carries country geotargeting in Google, costs least to hold, and still has the clean version of most trade names. If you sell abroad, .com is what buyers type by reflex. If both are free and the budget allows, take both and redirect one. The full argument is in .IN vs .COM.
