Five steps, mostly waiting
2. Get the auth code
Also called an EPP code. Your registrar must provide it on request — that is a registry requirement, not a courtesy.
3. Check the registrant email
The code and the approval both go there. If it is a defunct address, fix that first — and check the WHOIS before you touch anything.
4. Start it here
Enter the domain and the code, and pay the transfer fee — which buys you an extra year rather than replacing one.
5. Approve it
Click the link in the approval email. Usually done within a few hours; five days if left alone.
Before you start: copy DNS
Write down every A, CNAME, MX and TXT record. Send them to us and we will recreate them so nothing goes down.
Two conditions that cannot be waived
- The domain must be at least 60 days old. The clock also restarts after a previous transfer.
- It must not be within 60 days of a change of registrant.
No registrar can override either. If you are inside those windows, you have to wait it out.
When your web designer will not hand it over
This is the most common reason people call us about transfers, so here is the blunt version.
If the domain is registered in your name or your company’s name, it is yours. Ask in writing for the auth code and give a deadline. If they refuse, escalate to the registrar and then to ICANN, or to NIXI for a .in — a registrar is obliged to release a domain to its registrant.
If it is registered in their name, the position is weaker and messier. You may need to negotiate, or register a fresh name and redirect. Either way, check the WHOIS first so you know which conversation you are having.
Should you transfer at all?
Transfer if your current registrar hides renewal prices, charges for DNS or privacy, is slow to answer, or holds your domain in their own name. Do not transfer to save ₹100 — moving costs a little attention, and the reason should be structural.

About transfers
How long does a domain transfer take?
Usually a few hours once you approve the confirmation email. Left unapproved, most transfers complete automatically after five days.
Will my website or email go down?
No, provided the DNS records are copied across first. A transfer changes who manages the registration, not where the domain points. Send us your records and we will recreate them.
Do I lose the time left on my current registration?
No. The transfer fee adds a year to your existing expiry date, so nothing is lost.
What do I need to start a transfer?
The domain unlocked at your current registrar, the auth code (also called an EPP code), and access to the registrant email address so you can approve it.
Why can I not transfer a domain I just registered?
Registry rules block transfers within 60 days of registration or of a change of registrant. Nobody can waive that; you have to wait it out.
What if my current provider will not release it?
If the domain is registered in your name, it is yours and the registrar is obliged to release it — ask in writing, then escalate to the registrar and to ICANN or NIXI. Call us and we will read the WHOIS with you.
