.net was created for network operators, and thirty years later that is still where it sits most comfortably: internet service providers, hosting companies, data centres, VPN and messaging services, and technical products whose customers are themselves technical.

It is also the oldest and most established fallback when a .com is gone. Because it has been in use since 1985, a .net does not look improvised the way a brand-new extension can. Visitors who would hesitate over a name ending in .xyz will type a .net without thinking about it.

The honest caveat is type-in traffic: a proportion of people who mean to visit yourname.net will land on yourname.com out of habit. If the .com is owned by a competitor, that leakage is a real cost and you should weigh it before choosing.

Who .net is right for

Choose .net if you sell networking, hosting, connectivity or developer-facing infrastructure, or if you need a long-established alternative to a taken .com and .in is not right for your market.
