Let us start with the honest part: most websites do not need to buy an SSL certificate. A free Let’s Encrypt certificate encrypts traffic exactly as well as a paid one, browsers treat them identically, and we install free certificates on hosting accounts as a matter of course without charging for it.
There are real cases where a paid certificate earns its price. An organisation-validated certificate puts your verified company name in the certificate details, which matters when a corporate buyer or a bank checks who they are transacting with. A wildcard covers every subdomain under one certificate, which is far less work than issuing dozens separately.
