What a WHOIS record shows

  • Registrar — the company managing the registration
  • Creation and expiry dates — when it was registered and when it must next be renewed
  • Nameservers — where the domain currently points
  • Status codes — locks and pending actions
  • Registrant details — usually redacted these days

Why the owner is usually hidden

WHOIS once printed the registrant’s name, address, phone number and email in full public view, which was a gift to spammers and worse. Privacy regulation and registrar privacy services now redact those details by default. We include WHOIS privacy free on every eligible extension, which protects you the same way — and, fairly, protects everybody else from you.

Reading the status codes

  • clientTransferProhibited — transfer lock is on. Normal and protective.
  • clientHold — not resolving. Often an unpaid renewal or a failed verification.
  • redemptionPeriod — expired, recoverable by the owner only, for a fee.
  • pendingDelete — on its way out of the system and shortly available.

If you are waiting for a name to become free, pendingDelete is the signal that matters. The full explanation is in our WHOIS guide.

The check worth doing on your own domain

Look up your own name and read the registrant field. If it shows your web designer or an agency rather than you or your company, that is the most valuable minute you will spend on your domain all year — and the fix is a transfer.

FAQ

About WHOIS

What does a WHOIS lookup show?
The registrar, creation and expiry dates, nameservers and status codes. Registrant contact details are usually redacted, because privacy rules and registrar privacy services hide them by default.
Why can I not see who owns a domain?
Privacy regulation and free WHOIS privacy services redact personal details. We include WHOIS privacy free on every eligible extension, which protects you the same way.
Can I buy a domain that is already registered?
Sometimes, by contacting the owner through the proxy email in the record. Expect a high asking price — taking a different extension is usually cheaper and faster.
How do I check who my own domain is registered to?
Run the lookup and read the registrant name. If it is your web designer rather than you or your company, transfer it into your own name — it is the most valuable minute you will spend on your domain all year.
