How to Choose a Domain Name: 10 Rules That Actually Matter
Most advice about choosing a domain is written for American startups. These ten rules are written for a business that has to read its address aloud down an Indian phone line.

You will keep this name for a decade. Ten minutes of thought now is worth more than any amount of design work later.
1. It must survive the phone test
Say the domain aloud to somebody who cannot see it written down. If they can type it correctly first time, it passes. If you find yourself saying "with a hyphen" or "the number four, not the word" — it fails. Reject it.
This single test eliminates most bad domain names, and it matters more in India than in markets where business is done over email. A great deal of Indian trade happens on a phone call with poor signal.
2. No hyphens
Hyphens do not exist in speech. Every hyphen guarantees you will spell your address out for the rest of your working life, and guarantees some proportion of visitors reach a competitor at the version without it. If the unhyphenated name is taken, change the name or change the extension — do not add a hyphen.
3. No numbers
Same reason, plus ambiguity: is it "4" or "four"? A number in a domain means saying which one, every time. Numbers that are part of your actual brand are the only exception.
4. Shorter wins, but clear beats short
Shorter names are easier to type, remember and print. But do not amputate a clear name to save characters — rameshtextiles.in is better than rmtx.in, which means nothing to anybody.
5. Match what is on your board
If your shop sign says Sri Lakshmi Traders, your domain should be srilakshmitraders.in — not slt-coimbatore.com. Customers search for the name they saw, and a mismatch means they find somebody else.
6. Check the spoken ambiguities
Some words are traps. Consider how a name sounds when a customer with a different first language repeats it. Test it on three people before you buy.
7. A keyword helps, a keyword stuffed does not
A relevant word in the domain — textiles, motors, clinic — helps a customer understand you at a glance and makes a small honest contribution to relevance. A domain built entirely of keywords, like cheap-domain-registration-coimbatore-india.com, reads as spam to humans and does nothing for search rankings.
8. Do not date it
No years, no "2026", no "new". You will still be using this in 2033 and it will read as abandoned.
9. Check the name is not already a brand
Registering a domain gives you no trademark rights. If your chosen name is somebody else's registered trademark, you can lose the domain through arbitration and the money spent building on it. Search the Indian trade mark register before you commit to anything you plan to invest in.
10. Buy the obvious variants if the name matters
If the business is important, spend ₹1,500 rather than ₹500 and hold the .in and the .com — plus the common misspelling if there is an obvious one. Redirect them all to your primary. This is cheap insurance against a competitor or a squatter setting up on the twin of your name.
A worked example
A pump manufacturer in Coimbatore trading as "Sakthi Pumps and Motors". Options considered:
- sakthipumps.com — taken since 2006
- sakthi-pumps.com — rejected, rule 2
- sakthipumps2026.com — rejected, rule 8
- sakthipumpsandmotors.in — passes but long to say
- sakthipumps.in — free, clean, matches the board, passes the phone test
Register sakthipumps.in, and add sakthipumps.co.in defensively if the budget allows.
