What Is the Difference Between a Domain and Hosting?
People are sold both together and rarely told which does what. The distinction is simple, and knowing it stops you paying for something you do not need.

Two things get sold together and confused constantly. The distinction takes one sentence:
A domain is your address. Hosting is the building it points to.
The domain
Your domain is yourbusiness.in — the name people type, print and remember. You lease it from a registry a year at a time. Nobody else can have it while you keep renewing.
A domain by itself stores nothing. It is a pointer, and where it points is up to you.
The hosting
Hosting is disk space on a server that is always on, holding the actual files — your pages, images, price lists. When somebody types your address, the domain tells their browser which server to ask, and that server sends the page back.
Without hosting, your domain has nowhere to point. Without a domain, your hosting is reachable only by an IP address nobody will type.
When you need only a domain
More often than you would guess. You need the domain but not hosting if you:
- Registered defensively to stop somebody else taking your name
- Forward it to a WhatsApp Business catalogue, an Instagram page or a marketplace listing
- Only want email at you@yourbusiness.in — forwarding needs no hosting at all
- Use a site builder that hosts your pages on its own platform
That last case catches people out. If you build on a hosted platform, you are already paying for hosting inside that subscription — buying more separately is wasted money.
When you need both
You need both when you want a real website you control: your own pages, your own catalogue, your own email on your own server, and no platform that can change its rules or its pricing underneath you.

What about email?
Email sits between the two and is worth understanding separately.
- Forwarding — info@yourbusiness.in lands in the Gmail inbox you already use. Free with your domain here. No hosting needed.
- Mailboxes — real accounts with their own storage, sent items and multiple users. Needs mail hosting, included in our bundle.
For a one or two person business, forwarding is usually enough and costs nothing. The benefit is entirely in how the address reads to the person receiving your quotation.
Can I buy them from different companies?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Your domain can be registered with us and your site hosted anywhere — you simply point the nameservers or an A record at the host. We will make that change for you free of charge, whether or not you host with us.
There is a real argument for keeping them separate: if you fall out with your host, you can move the site without your address being held hostage. There is an equally real argument for keeping them together: one invoice, one renewal date, one number to call when something breaks. Either is defensible. What is not defensible is not knowing which company holds what.
The one thing to check today
Find out whose name your domain is registered in. Not who built the site, not who hosts it — who is the registrant. If it is your web designer rather than you or your company, fix that now with a transfer. Everything else on this page is reversible; that one occasionally is not.
